Farm in Winter

The courtyard light descends upon the small residential building, with the barn, another bulding and the surrounding landscape enveloped in dusk. Werner Berg’s late paintings show a changed world. The winter backgrounds are ever more spreading: pleading with the nature which is covered in snow and imprisoned in ice, beseeching trees pulled down by the weight of the cold and imploring restless people trudging through the freezing snow. These paintings were made by a person ready for departure. As long as a half a century ago, Berg perceived the world as if he had beholden it for his very first time: with freshness and innocence; with the passage of time, however, he took the trensience of things for granted, and this is his last melancholy glimpse into the past, embracing the world for the very last time.
