Nocturnal Landscape in Lower Carinthia

“This nocturnal landscape is something like the quintessence of the Lower Carinthian landscape – the old railway crossing, the way the landscape draws you into the distance. Many people that come from here and who have gone out into the world recognize their Lower Carinthian homeland in this painting. The region’s character is shown much better than it would be if one were to correctly document each individual detail.”

As with most of his paintings, Werner Berg created this one from sketches, retaining perceived color in his memory and embellishing the pictorial composition. It was important to him that in his work in the studio he was not bound by every detail of the impression made by nature.
