Woman Waiting on Her Way to the Market

From the very beginning, Werner Berg captured the very special reticent character of the mostly Slovene-speaking rural population. “It is noteworthy that I, who am a Western and fundamentally also an urban man, feel the attraction of a foreign people especially strongly,” remarked Werner Berg. The pink-blue-red color chord of Slovene folk art dominates this painting of a waiting cottager.

Wrapped in her scarf and shawl, she is waiting on a cold winter morning for the next ride to the nearby market, where she will proffer her humble products: the milk in the can and the chicken in a cage carefully covered with a kerchief.
